Sonic and Teen Filmmaker Shine

Sonic and teen filmmaker shine at the 2013 MTV Movie Awards

MTV and Chevrolet invited aspiring filmmakers from all over the country to submit their concepts for an innovative short film featuring Chevy Sonic. The film was then co-produced by MTV and aired during the 2013 MTV Movie Awards pre-show. The winning submission, “Never Let You Go,” comes from 18-year-old Joaquin Palma, an aspiring film director from Bronx, New York.
Click here to watch Joaquin’s dramatic tale about a daring soul determined to save his love from death in the most innovative way imaginable. He proves firsthand that ingenuity can do the impossible. And look for bonus behind-the-scenes footage as well!

Behind the scenes with Joaquin

Q: Joaquin, you’re about to have a film you wrote debut at the MTV Movie Awards, and you’re only 18 years old. That’s pretty impressive. When did you first realize you had a knack for movie making?
JOAQUIN: I’ve always been a visual person. When I was young I was put into a middle school that was dedicated to the arts. At first I was very into the visual arts portion of it, but I’ve also always been a big fan of movies and the behind-scenes portion of the DVDs, you know, to see how it was all made. Then in high school, a lot of my classes involved using Movie Maker and iMovie. The fact that you can create stories with images was just fascinating to me. I would say somewhere around my junior year of high school I was pretty sure that this was what I wanted to do.
Q: When and how did you get the initial idea for “Never Let You Go”?
JOAQUIN: I’ve always had different ideas for projects that I personally wanted to develop. So when I first heard about the details of the contest, I thought it might be a good opportunity to combine some of the ideas that I already had. One of them was a story about two lovers and a test against time, but I didn’t know how I would move that story forward. Another one I had involved a female character waking up in a hospital bed after an accident. I was also thinking of ways to sort of retell the story of Adam and Eve. So when I dreamt of the contest concept, I combined all my ideas into a love story that was kind of a post-apocalyptic retelling of sleeping beauty — where Prince Charming helps save his love. It all came together nicely.
Q: In what ways did Chevrolet’s “Find New Roads” inspire you to make this film?
JOAQUIN: When I read over the contest page, it asked for a character with a can-do spirit who never settles for less. My character is pretty much like that. He’s a scientist that uses innovative and genius ways to save the woman he loves. So he’s essentially finding a new road to saving her, and I thought that just tied in beautifully. I had the ideas beforehand, but I didn’t really know what way to tie them together, so the concept of Find New Roads really helped.
Q: Things must be pretty crazy for you right now. How cool was it when you got word from MTV that your concept had been chosen?
JOAQUIN: At first I was in disbelief. I mean, of course I was excited to know that I had won, but I didn’t really understand the scope of how huge it was. But once I really started thinking about it, it sorta started to sink in and I was pretty excited. Then when I went into the office and met the incredible people that would be helping me produce my movie, I was just ecstatic — through the roof, really. And then moving onto set, it was incredible.

Ladies, Start Your Engines

We all know that women can do anything they set their mind to—and that holds true for fixing their cars.
Granted, not every woman embraces the idea of grabbing a wrench and poking around in the engine.
But having been the CMO of my family’s business, Curry’s Auto Service since 1998, I have spent my fair share of time learning about the inner workings of everything from engines to tires. And I’m here to tell you: Not only is it empowering to be able to change my own oil, rotate the tires, and be able to identify what that pinging noise means—it’s a lot of fun.
So ladies, start your engines.
Believe it or not, a simple driveway inspection can give motorists peace of mind and save them from the inconvenience of a roadside breakdown, according to the Car Care Council.
“No one wants to experience car trouble while on vacation,” said Rich White, executive director of Car Care Council. “A simple vehicle inspection can help avoid the inconvenience and potential safety hazards of breaking down many miles away from home.
White insists that right in their own driveway, motorists can identify how road-ready their vehicle is with the 10-minute driveway inspection recommended by the Car Care Council. If repairs or maintenance are needed, they can be performed before hitting the road.
Here’s what to do:
  • Check all fluids. This included the engine oil, as well as the power steering and brake and transmission fluids, plus windshield washer solvent and antifreeze/coolant.
  • Check the hoses and belts. They can become cracked, brittle, frayed, loose, or show signs of excessive wear. These are critical to the proper functioning of the electrical system, air conditioning, power steering, and the cooling system.
  • Check the tires. Everything from the tire pressure to the tread. Uneven wear indicates a need for wheel alignment. Tires should also be checked for bulges and bald spots.
  • Check the wipers and lighting. This ensures you can see and be seen. Check that all interior and exterior lighting is working properly and inspect and replace worn wiper blades so you can see clearly when driving during rain or snow.
  • Check the gas cap. Caps that are damaged, loose, or missing should be replaced to prevent gas from spilling or evaporating.
  • Check your emergency kits. The Car Care Council recommends that motorists restock their emergency kit regularly and consider a tune-up to help the engine deliver the best balance of power and fuel economy.
  • Now that you are ready to get on the road, here are a few more things to keep in mind. Avoid aggressive driving, observe the speed limit, and avoid excessive idling. While these aren’t traditionally “ladies” issues, I’ve seen plenty of moms in SUVs zoom by me on the highway. When you are stressed, in a rush to get the kids, or are late for an important meeting—slow down. Your car, and your family, will thank you.

Congratulations to the MVP team at Shottenkirk for another rave review!

“… Mary was assisted by Josh at Shottenkirk for her test drive of the Enclave. Great car, great experience, let's move forward. Unfortunately, I was stuck at work and couldn't join, but began communicating with Josh and Paul by e-mail. Not the traditional method, but they were responsive with each e-mail and the string soon became a sale. I appreciate their flexibility in communication such that despite my work focus for the week, we'd negotiated a sale in 18 hrs from test drive to close . . . several of those spent sleeping.
With a deal in hand, Justin entered the frame, taking the credit app via phone, and having -- essentially -- completed paperwork upon our Thursday PM arrival for delivery. Between Josh, Paul, and Justin, it's hard to pick an MVP . . . the whole experience was great! I'd gladly recommend Shottenkirk, where I think their smaller size is a competitive advantage. Quality over volume can be a very appealing model. Thank you, Shottenkirk Chevy!” – Christopher Z.

Congratulations Shottenkirk Chevrolet Team for another great review!

I purchased my new Chevy Avalanche last Nov. 2012. I traded in my pickup truck and they changed out the original wheels on my Avalanche to chrome sporty wheels after spotting them on another vehicle. I have been out there a couple of time, and they run my truck through there car wash. Jason Waite, goes above and beyond his normal job…” – Renda S.
